Siemens Invests Rs 186 Crore in Aurangabad Metro Facility

German engineering giant Siemens is set to invest Rs 186 crore ($25.5 million) in a state-of-the-art metro train manufacturing facility in Aurangabad, Maharashtra. Scheduled to be operational by 2028, the facility will be developed in stages, serving as an export hub for metro turnkey projects. Equipped with cutting-edge technologies, local components, and a skilled workforce, this facility will complement an existing bogie manufacturing plant, which began operations in November 2022.

The Aurangabad facility will significantly enhance Siemens’ capacity to meet growing market demands, reinforcing its global rail industry presence. Siemens plans a total investment of Rs 1,000 crore over the next two years to expand its production capabilities across various sectors. This ambitious investment plan includes Rs 519 crore for the gas-insulated switchgear factory in Goa, which will produce critical components for industries such as data centres, metro rail, oil & gas, and steel.

In addition to the Aurangabad project, expansions are underway at Siemens’ power transformer factory in Kalwa and its vacuum interrupter factory in Goa. These expansions aim to bolster Siemens’ production capabilities, ensuring the company can meet the increasing demand for its products and services. By enhancing these facilities, Siemens is positioning itself to better serve its customers and remain competitive in the global market.

Siemens is also constructing two factories in India that are set to lead global sustainability benchmarks. These factories are part of Siemens’ broader initiative to contribute to the Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat (Self-reliant India) schemes through increased localization. Built to LEED Gold standards, these facilities will incorporate a range of sustainable technologies, including photovoltaic solar power systems, microgrids, electric vehicle charging stations, battery energy storage systems, and rainwater harvesting systems.

The sustainable technologies incorporated in these new factories will help Siemens reduce its environmental impact and promote resource efficiency. The use of recycled materials and circular construction techniques will further minimise the environmental footprint of these facilities. By adopting these advanced technologies and practices, Siemens is demonstrating its commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.

The establishment of the new metro train manufacturing unit in Aurangabad is expected to have a significant positive impact on the local economy. By creating numerous job opportunities, it will contribute to economic growth and development in the region. The advanced manufacturing capabilities of the facility will also position Aurangabad as a key player in the global metro rail industry, attracting further investments and fostering industrial development.

Siemens’ strategic initiatives in India reflect its commitment to innovation, sustainability, and economic growth. By investing in state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities and expanding production capabilities, Siemens is aligning with India’s vision of becoming a global manufacturing leader. These initiatives are poised to transform the local economies where the facilities are located, enhancing the overall infrastructure and technological capabilities of India.
