Roofing Specifiers Urged to Futureproof Against Climate Change

AS PREDICTIONS suggest global temperatures will exceed records in the next five years, roofing manufacturer Klober is urging specifiers to futureproof roofing specifications.

The World Meteorological Organization’s latest annual assessment is that temperatures will likely exceed 1.5C above pre-industrial levels for the first time in human history. Its probability has increased to a 66% likelihood, up from the 48% estimate of last year.

High temperatures are the most common direct effect of global warming, but climate change is also influencing weather patterns. The probability of more intense wind events is heightened as was the case, for example, in 2022’s Storm Eunice when a record-breaking 122mph wind speed was recorded. Such events can subject roofing to significant wind uplift forces and so preventative solutions must be considered.

Wind Warning

Indeed, the Met office has today issued two severe weather warnings for wind, warning of unseasonably strong gusts and the potential for damage and travel disruption.

“This is an unusual time of year for such strong winds and, with many people on holiday or planning outdoor activities, they are likely to cause some disruption,” says Met Office Chief Meteorologist, Paul Gundersen.

Prepare for Wind Uplift

Nick King, Portfolio Manager at Klober, said: “While many may not initially think of heightened wind speeds when they hear global warming, it’s something to consider and prepare for as weather patterns are predicted to change. Wind uplift can cause considerable damage, such as tile or roof membrane damage that can lead to additional problems like leaks and associated damage. Specifiers should make sure their membrane of choice is durable, suitably wind resistant and water resistant to help prevent such damage occurring and save the homeowner money and down time in the process.”

The Association of British Insurers said that last year’s storms cost £473 million in insurance claims for property damage, out of a total £500 million paid. Many roofs were affected by the storms, including the roof of the O2 arena being ripped off in high winds and church spires untopped.
