Laing O’Rourke tops October contracts league

Laing O’Rouke has confirmed a £300m order to build a major cancer research campus in Oxford from the  Ellison Institute for Transformative Medicine.

The single job catapulted the firm to the top of the October rankings for work won, recharging its orders secured this year.

The Los Angeles-based cancer research institute plans to establish a UK base and build the big campus at the established Oxford Science Park to the south east of city.

According to data compiled by Barbour ABI, the total value of awards secured by the 50 most successful contractors totalled £3.29bn, around £700m up on September’s below average total. This represented 128 projects in number.

In the rolling 12-month league of wins, Bouygues took top ranking, now closely chased by Morgan Sindall with Balfour Beatty in third place.

Among the other big wins Willmott Dixon came second in the month with several new orders including vamping Darlington Station and a new college building for Wigan and Leigh College’s Parson’s Walk campus.

The riverside job will be one of the largest fit-outs, in terms of financial value, that Skanska UK has undertaken.

London’s Hackney Council has appointed Ardmore to deliver the final phase of its Britannia residential-led regeneration scheme next to Shoreditch Park.

The £154m design and build contract will see Ardmore deliver 371 mixed-tenure units within four residential buildings of up to 25 storeys.
