KMRL Awards Contract to Afcons for Kochi Metro Phase 2 Expansion
Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) has awarded a Rs 11.41 billion contract for civil construction works to Afcons Infrastructure Limited. This contract will facilitate the development of Kochi Metro Phase 2, extending from JLN Stadium to Kakkanad. Afcons Infrastructure, the sole bidder to meet all technical requirements, will begin construction of viaducts and stations soon.
The project includes the design and construction of an elevated viaduct and ten elevated stations, stretching from JLN Stadium Metro Station to Infopark via Kakkanad. Work is scheduled to commence in July 2024. Afcons Infrastructure has a notable portfolio, having worked on major infrastructure projects such as the Delhi Meerut RRTS, Atal Tunnel, Chenab Railway Bridge, Chennai Metro Blue Line, and the rail line to ICTT, Vallarpadam.
The total length of Phase 2 is 11.2 km, with new metro stations planned at Palarivattom Junction, Palarivattom Bypass, Chembumukku, Vazakkala, Padamugal, Kakkanad Junction, Cochin SEZ, Chittethukura, Kinfra, and Infopark. KMRL aims to complete the civil construction of the Pink Line in 20 months, followed by system signaling works in an additional four months. Simultaneous viaduct work at six locations and construction at four station locations will utilize a precast method to expedite progress, with a nearly six-hectare precast yard identified at HMT Kalamassery. The project will feature two special spans of steel truss, each over 60 meters long, located at the Palarivattom Bypass crossing and near St. Martin Church, Palarivattom Junction.
