The Congress-led Karnataka government is actively promoting the expansion of Bengaluru Metro into the city’s outskirts and the construction of double-decker flyovers. However, experts have raised concerns, suggesting that suburban rail might better serve these areas.

Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has recently awarded contracts to consultants for conducting feasibility studies on these ambitious initiatives. Aarvee Associates Architects Engineers & Consultants Pvt. Ltd, headquartered in Hyderabad, has been entrusted with preparing a comprehensive feasibility study report.

Their assignment involves evaluating the feasibility of extending the Green Line from Madavara (BIEC) to Tumakuru over a distance of 52.4 km. This extension is planned to be executed under a Public Private Partnership (PPP) model. The contract, valued at Rs 1.25 crore, was officially awarded on June 29, marking a significant step forward in the project’s planning and implementation process.

The decision to extend the Bengaluru Metro and construct double-decker flyovers underscores the government’s commitment to easing traffic congestion and improving urban connectivity. Proponents argue that these initiatives will enhance mobility across the city and its outskirts, supporting economic growth and urban development goals. However, debates continue on whether prioritizing suburban rail might offer a more sustainable long-term solution for addressing the region’s transportation needs while balancing costs and environmental impacts.
