Highland Roofer’s Rooftop Artwork Goes Viral

A HIGHLAND ROOFER with a creative flare is being praised worldwide for his original rooftop artwork.

Gary McIntyre began adding his personal designs to roofs in 2019. He first featured his work on a friend’s roof after pitching him the unique idea of incorporating a lead stag design. Gary’s friend was so pleased with the result, he asked him to do another one. This second artwork depicted a salmon and a fisherman, titled ‘An Afternoon’s Fishing’ and was awarded the UK Pitched Roofing Award in 2022 for Best Use of Slate for a Domestic Project.

Since then, Gary’s work has received global recognition online and within the roofing community. With the help of his colleague, Adam Schuerman, Gary has featured several other designs in the roofs he has worked on. These include a lead bat slated in Ballachulish slate on a property in Balblair which has bats nesting in the attic, and his own version of Banky’s ‘Girl with Balloon’ on the roof of a house on Telford Road, Inverness.

Gary said: “A lot of people that are interested in having works of art on their roofs are now getting in touch. I have started a bit of a revolution within the UK roofing industry for roofers trying to do artwork.”

Following this newfound popularity, Gary was approached by the director of the Masters School of Slating in Cologne, Germany after his lead stag artwork went viral online, who told Gary he could skip the five-year waiting list to join their prestigious ornamental slating course.

In the UK, one of Gary’s designs is now featured in South Lanarkshire College’s ornamental slating course. He has also been invited as a guest speaker for Master Roofers’ ornamental slating course in Manchester.

Gary’s latest project which he is currently working on will feature a family of Highland cows on the roof of a property in Aberdeen. He has also been commissioned to recreate the Fyrish Monument on a roof in Evanton which he will begin this summer.

“I am really excited to work on new designs,” Gary said.

“So far I have been doing mostly animals but I would like to experiment also with trees and foliage as well as birds.”
