Family Roofing Business Raises £55,000 for Young People with Cancer

SUSSEX-BASED Richard Soan Roofing Services has raised over £55,000 for Teenage Cancer Trust at its annual Race Day event.

Managing Director Richard Soan, along with his family, has been supporting the charity for over decade, and on Friday 11 August their annual Race Day event took place at Brighton Racecourse.

Organised by Richard, the event received huge support from the roofing and construction industry. Suppliers and contractors, to surveyors and architects, along with their guests, showed their support on the day by bidding for some incredible donated items in the charity auction.

Richard was joined at the event by Clare Towner from Brighton, whose son Harry was diagnosed with cancer at 14 and received support from the Teenage Cancer Trust.

Clare spoke to guests on the day about the impact their fundraising has had on their lives. She said, “You never know what will happen. Harry woke up one morning with a lump under his arm, and when this was biopsied, we were told it was a very rare blood cancer.

“Harry was supported by the Teenage Cancer Trust team at their unit at the Royal Marsden in Sutton, it’s a much better environment for young adults. Teenage Cancer Trust certainly makes life with cancer more bearable.

“Harry is 24 now and has been cancer free for four years. Teenage Cancer Trust makes a massive difference to young people facing the challenge of their lives.”

Charity Race Day

With the generous donations received on Race Day, Richard has now raised a total £350,000 for the Teenage Cancer Trust.

The money raised will now be used to fund specialist hospital units, nurses and youth workers across the UK that provide age-appropriate care and emotional support to those in need.

Richard said: “We are delighted to continue our support for Teenage Cancer Trust and are naturally very pleased with the amount raised on the day.

“My thanks go to all the organisations who supported the day because without their support this event could not happen and to those individuals who participated in the auction and especially those that were successful with winning bids.”

Helen Farquharson, Senior Relationship Manager for South and South East at Teenage Cancer Trust, said: “Richard gives up so much time and effort to make this incredible event one of the most loved on the calendar for all who attend. We’re so grateful to Richard and his family for putting on this event and for their fantastic support over many years.

“The money raised will mean that we can continue to provide young people like Harry with expert nurses to support them through treatment, dedicated youth workers to help them cope with anxiety and isolation, and a network of other young people to chat to.”
