Concrete Roof Tile Factory Gets Sustainability Boost with Solar Installation

A CONCRETE ROOF TILE manufacturer based in Toome, Northern Ireland, has installed a new solar system on its factory roof to help boost the power needs of the business’s operations.

Northstone Materials, which is part of global building materials company CRH PLC, has operated in Northern Ireland for almost 60 years.

The company supplies a range of concrete roof tiles and accessories to all regions of the United Kingdom and Ireland. Recognising this, Northstone Materials chose to make a pioneering example of the Toome site by installing a 232kWp Solar photovoltaic (PV) System.

The solar PV panels were strategically positioned by Enerpower on the factory roof for maximum electricity self-generation and ease of integration into the concrete roof tile manufacturing process for maximum consumption.

The solar panels are expected to produce 180MWh of electricity per annum, enough to power over 50 homes in Northern Ireland, and considerably reduce the tile factory’s reliance on the electricity grid. This project is one of several sustainability initiatives within Northstone Material’s roadmap to reduce its Scope 1 & 2 GHG emissions by 42% by 2030, from a 2021 absolute baseline.

A Northstone Materials spokesperson said: “This installation required considerable investment from Northstone Materials and demonstrates our dedication to environmentally responsible practices and a greener future.”

Northstone Materials roof tile range includes thin leading edge interlocking tiles, in flat and profiled designs, together with a full range of accessories. For sales queries, please contact sales@northstone-ni.com.
