Youthbuild UK is a charity which celebrates young people working in the construction industry from disadvantaged and challenging backgrounds. The charity engages with construction employers to offer work opportunities to disadvantaged young people. They also highlight that encouraging and supporting disadvantaged and disengaged young people into construction not only transforms their lives, but also helps to strengthen the industry.

The Youthbuild Young Builder of the Year Awards focus on not only the qualifications gained, but the distance travelled for each nominee, whether that is rising to challenges, breaking down barriers or overcoming adversity to achieve success.

Highly Commended Apprentices

Award finalist Jack Lal was nominated as a roofing apprentice at SPV Special Projects after completing his Level 1 qualification in construction with Juniper Training. He has now progressed to training for a Level 2 in Sheeting and Cladding.

Fellow award finalist, Kai Newhall completed his Level 1 in Brickwork. He is now due to complete his Level 2 in Warehouse Operations shortly, and then plans to start a Part 1 and 2 Scaffolding qualification.

Both young men have overcome adversity and challenges during their younger years but have not let this hold them back from working towards their goals.

She added, “The day was one of inspiration and celebration showcasing some amazing stories and young people. Well done Jack and Kai. An amazing and well-deserved achievement.”
